Description

* We have received reports that an explosion and fire occurred on board container ship, MSC CAPETOWN (IMO: 9311737) during discharge operations at Colombo Port, Sri Lanka on 10 August 2024.

* It is reported that both the explosion and the fire originated below deck in the area of the vessel's accommodation block.

* The fire was later extinguished with assistance from the local fire brigade.

* It is reported that cargo stowed on deck in that area had already been discharged from the vessel at the time of the occurrence, although cargo stowed underdeck in the vicinity of the fire will inevitably have sustained fire/heat/smoke damage; water damage, as a result of the fire-fighting operation; and possibly blast damage. We already have cargo surveyors on hand to assess any loss or damage to cargo as a result of this incident.

* Besides any recovery issues arising from damage to cargo, It is possible that General Average and Salvage issues may also arise as a result of this incident.

* We therefore recommend that you contact us urgently if you are concerned with any cargo stowed on board this vessel so that we can immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.
